A few scary figures were sitting on the sofa in the living room. They were a zombie, a ghost, a mummy, a vampire and a big, hairy monster. They had been out all evening collecting sweets in the neighborhood. Now they were lying in a big pile on the table and were gradually disappearing into the five smacking mouths.
A scary children's film was playing on the TV in front of them, in which an invisible man was causing trouble in a school.
The monster leaned forward and boldly reached into a bag of chips and let the contents disappear into his stomach.
The vampire watched with a grin, showed his sharp teeth and ate a bat made of wine gum. "It's almost as tasty as blood," he smacked his lips contentedly.
The mummy ate a few sheets of edible paper on which he had previously painstakingly drawn Egyptian letters.
The ghost didn't like these things at all. They weren't spooky enough for him. So he started on a large bag of cotton candy, which looked lovely and light and somehow spooky.
"It could really be Halloween every day," said the monster happily. I could stuff myself with so much candy all the time. One day a year when my mom doesn't complain that I'm getting too fat or that the sugar is bad for my teeth."
The others nodded in agreement and continued eating.
Only one of them had held back so far. The zombie had never touched a single piece of candy.
"Hey, man, what about you?" he was asked at some point. "Don't you want to eat any of our loot? Help yourself already. If not today, then when?"
The zombie looked at the others silently and motionlessly for several seconds. Then finally he nodded slowly.
He reached into one of his jacket pockets and pulled out a worm, which he then swallowed between his black, rotten teeth.
"Ugh! What's that? Have you gone mad?" the vampire was disgusted. "You don't have to scare anyone anymore. We're at home now."
The zombie wasn't interested in that and pulled out another worm, which was still moving. He ate that one too.
"Hey, guys," the ghost got scared. "The worm is real," he whispered.
The other costumed people also felt a chill run down their spines.
The monster carefully poked the zombie with his index finger. The zombie then twisted his face in pain and fell apart completely. Only seconds later, all that was left of him was a small pile of dust.
The monster, the ghost, the mummy and the vampire began to scream and ran out of the living room as fast as they could.
